On August 14, 2008, Maggie moved into Pulley Hall of the University of Southern Mississippi. She was so excited about moving on campus her freshman year. When she got to her dorm, she was very disturbed. It was not what Maggie expected. Her room was very small and she had to walk all the way down the hallway to go to the bathroom. She expected to have at least a sink in her room, but she did not have that. This was very different from what Maggie was use to. She was hurt, but had to adjust to the college life of living on her own.
Maggie wanted to get an apartment so bad because of her current living conditions. She felt that she deserved it and could not live like that anymore. Sharing a bathroom with thirty other girls was not fun at all. The water did not get hot, so the showers were not pleasant at all.
Maggie talked with her parents about getting an apartment. They told her that she had to stay in her dorm for a year because of the contract. Maggie started to cry and thought about moving back home. She decided that she did not want to let her family down by not being able to make it on her own. The only choice she had was to stay at USM and complete her freshman year. Maggie’s dad promised to get her an apartment her sophomore year. After her first year experience, she never looked back at USM dorms.

The dorms
University of Southern Mississippi dorms should be renovated to better accommodate students. We should be able to walk into a place that reminds us if home. Somewhere that is calming and feels like a sanctuary. Things should not be old, raggedy, and worn out. We deserve the best of the best to pursue our academic careers.
For print media, I am going to write a letter to the editor explaining the conditions of the dorms and why they need to be updated. This will get the word out to others and let them know how we feel about our rooms. For visual with words, I will design a floor plan that shows more desirable student living. In this floor plan, there will be a sink in every room. There will also be a bathroom between every two rooms. Four girls will share one bathroom. The rooms will also have carpet and curtains in each of them. For informational, I will hold a petition for my dorm. My dorm mates will sign their names to show everyone that our dorms really need work. For structured, I will write a letter to the president to let her know how we feel about the dorms. Literacy
I have learn that many people acquire literacy in many different ways. Weather they have always been brought up on literacy and reading different books in their house hold or they mostly read book all threw out their years of being in school. Either way people read and write literacy every day, some may look the same, but many are different and unique.
As a child I had many experience with literacy. I began as a child when often my big sister would always read to me at night before I would go to bed. I would just love the way she would pretend like she was one of the characters in the book, an we would act out different scene together. Then as I started kindergarten my teacher would always assign us book every day to take home and read with our family. And I loved each and every book, because they were very exiting and interesting, and fun to read with my family. The experience with my family,(reading)made me want to read and read even more. Often my family would read together at least once a week as I was coming up as a child.

The Basketball Games
The University of Southern Mississippi basketball games attendance is very scares during the season. People do not show up at the basketball games like they do the football games. It makes the school and the gym look bad when they show the game on television and no one is there. Our gym is too big to be empty. Everyone that live on campus can fit inside of it.
One way to make people aware of the game is to post more signs around campus to let them know the date and time. By doing this, people can not say that they did not know about the game. Signs are up everywhere around campus. The signs should be in bold letters and on bright paper to draw peoples attention. This should boost attendance by a great bit.
Another thing that can be done is to announce the game date and time over the dorm intercoms. This will let everyone sitting in there rooms, with nothing else to do, know that there is a game going on. Some people do not go out a lot and do not have an ideal of what is going on around campus. You might hear that there is going to be a game in the beginning of the week, but when it comes you forget all about it. Everyone that lives on campus will have excuse as to why they did not show up. Admission is already free for every USM student.
If you let people know that there will be prizes given away during the game, more of them will show up and be willing to show there school spirit. Students are always looking for fun and games to get into. The basketball game will be a good way to entertain the students while they are competing for the prizes. If USM start giving students rides to the gym from the dorms the seats will surely be filled! The freshman quads are a long way from the gymnasium. The rides will help the students out a lot. It will get them excited to go to the next one. They will feel so relieved that they do not have to walk a mile just to get to a basketball game.
USM should mail out schedules to the alumni to let them know when the games are held and where they are going to be. More alumni will probably attend the game than the students. Some of the students have a lot of work to do and can not fit a basketball game into their schedules. A lot of the alumni would love to come back to there old school and see some basketball. Desperate Housewives is a highly addictive show about suburban women who live normal lives just like we do. The women on Wisteria Lane are very close friends who have strong relationships that can not be broken. All of the women are married with children, and aspiring careers. The narrator of the show committed suicide on the first episode. Everyone in the neighborhood was shocked.
The show consist four main characters: Susan, Lynette, Bree, and Gabrielle. These characters make the show interesting and captivating. The drama that each family has is exciting. It is so realistic and keeps you wanting more. These women get together weekly to discuss their problems relationship wise, and the hardships of being a mother.
Gabrielle is a successful young women who is married to Carlos. She use to be a model before she met Carlos. He makes all the money, so Gabby does not have to work anymore. She did not want any children, but Carlos disagreed with her. He tampered with her birth control pills to get her pregnant but it did not work. Carlos got into trouble with the law and had to go to jail. He also lost most of his money, which forced Gabby to get a job. She was very disappointed by this. Finally, Carlos got out of jail and returned home. He could not get a job because of his criminal background.
In the new season of Desperate Housewives, Carlos and Gabby have two pretty little girls. Carlos was left blind after the hurricane, which was hard for Gabby to cope with. Now Carlos is a misuse at the local country club. He loves this job and makes just enough money to support his family. Gabby take care of the girls daily while Carlos works. At this time in Carlos’s life he is happy because he has the love of his family. Even though they are not rich, they have each other.
Family is what matters the most. We might think that we do not need them, but they are the ones that are always there for us no matter what. They always show us unconditional love. Every family does not act in this matter. They treat you as if you do not exist.
In one episode of Desperate Housewives, Bree pretended as if she was pregnant. She did this to cover up her teenage daughters’ pregnancy. She did not want everyone in Fairview to know the family’s’ secret. Bree also wanted to keep up her daughters reputation. Bree showed that she really cared about her daughter. She loves her with all of her heart. Most of our parents would not do anything like that for us. We would just have to deal with it. That is a blessing that her mother was there and able to do that for her. This show exhibits how some parents would do anything for their children.
Unlike Bree, Paul was a bad father to his son Zach. He was mourning the death of his wife Mary Alice and forgot all about his son. He was not there for his son emotionally when he needed him. Zach had to do for himself because his mother committed suicide and she was all he had. This was a very hard situation that both of them had to deal with. This tragedy event could have made them come together, but instead it made them fall apart. Paul ran away from home because he wanted to start a new life for himself. He felt so unwanted at home with his father. He had to make a change for the better. His father was left lonely and devastated. He wondered where his son could be, so he started to look for him. Paul could not find his son which left him sadden but he had no choice but to move on with his life.
Desperate Housewives is also a good example of unity. Four women always stick together no matter what. They always have fights among themselves but have the heart to forgive. Their friendship is one of a kind that can last a lifetime. It is amazing how so many women, with so many different attitudes, can have such a unique network.

Desperate Housewives is a very adult and mature show and is not intended for the young people. It has some sexual explicit scenes and foul language. Unlike other shows, this show will have you at the edge of your seat. You will always want to know what is going to happen next. You will make sure you tune in for the next episode.

The fire alarm
Today the fire alarm when off. We had to go outside for about fifteen minutes. I was coming back from lunch when I saw a friend that told me the fire alarm was on. I was mad because I did not have any thime to waste. I wanted to go inside but I could not. I waiting in the back for a while until I could not stand it anymore. It was freezing outside. My hands and face was so cold. Plus I had heels on which made it even worse because my feet was hurting. My friend and I went inside of the building while the alarm was on and waited until it when off. We was so happy that we went inside because it was so much warming in the dorm than it was outside. We stayed at the door because we could not go up to the while the alarm was on. If we did go up we probably would have gotten a documentation put in our file. Most of the time when we have to go outside because of the alarm, nothing goes on. We do not have a fire or anything. That really gets on my nerves having to sit outside in the cold while nothing is going on. Some people do not go outside when the alarm goes off. They just stay in there rooms because they know from past experiences that there is never a fire. Sometimes I wish I could do the same thing. Then again I don't want to stay in my room and get burned up. I would rather stay outside if it is a real fire. They should announce that it is a fire so we can know what to do at times like this.

Rodents, Critters, and Animals
Rodents, critters and animals get on last nerves went i see them around campus. Every time i go to class i see a cat running around here. They are everywhere. It seem like they are running this school. I believe that people feed those cats. I see cat food and bowls all around campus. I personally can not stand cats. They give me a headache and seems as if they are always in the way. Some are black, orange and brown. They all are fat and very healthy so you know they are getting fed really good. Everytime i walk past them i feel like i am getting the evil eye or something. I feel like they are about to attack me with thosse ugly greens eyes. That makes me sick. Sometimes i just want to grab them and shake them by the neck so they can die. One night that my friends and i where walking, we saw this big fat fury looking thing. We did not know what it was. It looked like an big fat rat. That's what my friends and i thought it was. A girl that was behind us told us that it was a possuem. It looked so gross. That was the ugliest thing i ever seen in my life. I was running back to my dorm to get away from that thing. That was nasty.
In my dorm, we have a problem with little bugs and roaches running around. One girl even found a mouse in her room. Thank God that i haven not found anything in my room. sometimes i see roaches lying on their backs in the hallways. This is a big problem that needs to be dealt with.

Food on Campus
My experience in the fresh food sucks. They have the same food everyday. It does not feel good waking up in the morning knowing that they are going to have the same food in the cafe everyday. They aways have baked chicken and cheese toast. I love baked chicken but sometimes it just get old to me. I absolutely will not eat cheese toast for my dinner. I am not use to that. At home, I get a full meal prepared for me everyday. I really miss those days of being able to eat whenever and whatever you want to when you get ready. Now you have to eat was is being cooked everyday when it is n ot even that good. That really gets on my nerves. It like makes me want to go to the mall or somewhere off campus just to get a good meal. We deserve to get a great meal prepared for use everyday because of how much we pay for our meal plan. We should be eating steaks and everything else. Sometimes me and my friends go to Hillcrest to get something to eat. The food is so much better than the food in fresh food. The food is seasoned a whole lot better and taste more homemade. I could eat in there everyday. Everyone talks about the freshman fifteen. I know that i want gain those pounds because of the food that is not appetizing. The red beans and rice really makes me want to throw up. I will never eat that again. Now i am force to eat in there everyday or starve.
The 2008 Election
When the news announced that Barack Obama was the next president, i was so happy. I could not do anything but yell. It was a wonderful experience for a lot of people. Everyone in the quad was outside of there rooms yelling and cheering because of his victory. It was so exciting. Everyone was running around giving peple hugs and saying that we mad it. Some people were looking at us crazy because they wanted McCain to win. He was too old to be a president anyway. I did not think that he was qualify for the job. I believe that everyone should have voted for Obama. He is the one that can get the job done. He is a well qualified man that deserve this title. He has made a difference in so many peoples lives. A lot of people that i knew cried when he won. He is the first african american president. This is something that people thought they wiuld never see. We were always told that black people were no good and would never amount to nothing. Obama is a symbol of achievement for black people. This has been a dream that we never thought would happen. When we was younger and someone said that they wanted to be a president, we would say choose something else because you know that is not true. Today we can tell our children that that is a dream that can be accomplished.
My first semester
This semester has been very good so far. I have had a lot of fun being around my friend and getting to know other people. Now that i have gotton use to the campus, i never want to leave. I love spending the weekend here with my USM family. They make me feel comfortable and welcomed. I never thought of college life being this fun. It actually turned out to better than i thought it would be. USM is my favorite place to be right now. I could not see myself at any other college. I know that God has led me in the right direction. This school just seem so perfect to me. All of my teachers are wonderful and have great values. I know that i will get the proper education that i need to succeed in live. USM is not too big or too small. It is just the right size for me. All of my classes are in walking distance and are not far from my dorm. My friends life by me and we get to meet for lunch and other things. It is so fun living on a college campus. When i first got here, i din't think that i would like it at all. My parents left me and i was here all alone. I was searching for my friends and i could not find them. When i finally found them, i was so excited. I was alone anymore with all of these strange people that i did not know. I will never forget my college experience. It was the best thing that ever happened to me.

This weekend has been so great. I am so glad I stay at school this weekend. Some of my work got done. If I was at home, I would not have done any work. I probably would have been bored the whole weekend and stuck in the house. Even though most of the students when home, I still had fun.
Friday, I went to the fashion show that was going on upstairs in the thad. It was a very entertaining event. The models did an excellent job. The show just had too much sexual material in it. That was just too much for those little kids that was there. After the fashion show, my friend Chasity and I went to this little house party. It was kinda boring at first, but it got better as more people started to come. Later on that night, I started to see more of my friends and the party started to become fun. Two girls were trying to ruin the fun by starting a fight. We had to make sure that they did not fight so we could dance and continue mingling. Overall the party was good.
On Saturday, my friend Tyese came back to school. I was so happy she came home because I was bored and wasn't doing anything else. Me and her rode around and went to the mall. We has us a good little time. After, we left the mall we came back to school to do some work. You know we always have to fit that into out schedule. I was glad that I got my work out the way. It was easy, but just frustrated me. I got through it though.
On Sunday, I got up early and went to church. I was glad I did that because it was very good. I really needed that word the pastor preached. That was a good way to finish my weekend.

Fall Break
My fall break was kinda boring. I was still glad to be out of school. For the most part I relaxed my brain and rest over the break. I also hung out with my friends and got a chance to go visit my family members.
My friends and I went to the movies to see quarintine. It was a good movie to go see with someone but was not all that scary to me. I hated the way it ended. Everyone died in the movie. At least one person could have survived. My friends and I still had a great time.
Over the break, I also spent some quality time with my puppy Michelle. I love her to death!! When, I get home, I always go in the back yard and talk to her. As soon as she hears my voice, she runs and jump on me. Then she just falls out in front of me because she wants me to rub her. So, I rub her belly and she wags her tail and licks all over my hands. I try to go outside with her as often as I can so she can always remenber me. Everytime I come home she gets taller and taller. I don't want her to get big on me to fast. She is already getting very strong. When she gets older, I might not be able to go back there with her.

My Weekend Ahead
I am so excited to be back in my hometown of Jackson, Mississippi this weekend. It's a blessing to be here with my mother. I miss her so much because I haven't seen her in like two weeks. What would I do if I went to school in Texas or somewhere far away where I couldn't come home every weekend? I would probably lose my mind. I'm glad i'm only an hour in a half away from home. If I need anything, I can just ask my mother and she will give it to me.
Another reason why I am exicted to be home is because the Mississippi State Fair in town. I am so ready to go and eat up all of my favorites. I love to eat ice cream , chicken on a stick, fish, lemonade, and candy apples. I am also ready to have a good time with my best friend Ke-anna. When we get together, we always have fun. When we go to the fair, it's like a family reunion. You see all your old friends and everyone you know. That's why this is a event that everyone should attend every year.
I also came home because I miss my church. I work in the nursery with the babies and I haven't been there in like three weeks. I know they miss my help and the kids miss me to too. My life just don't seem right because I haven't been going to church. When I do go, I feel so good inside. It just makes me so happy. Can't wait until Sunday to see my church family and get the word of the lord.

The 2008 Presidental Election
The 2008 election has been very interesting so far. First the fight was between Hilary and Barack. Now the fight is between John McCain and Barack Obama. A lot of women wanted to see Hilary stay in the race because she was the first women candiate to run for president. History is still being made to this day with Obama being the first African American candiate to run for president. These historical events have awaking America and got them more involved in the election. It has also made a huge impact on college campuses in America. More younger people have decided to vote this year. This is why the 2008 election is so important. Everyone wants to be apart of history, know who is going to win, and what can they do for our country.
Today at the University of Mississippi, there will be an presidental debate between John McCain and Barack Obama. People are very exicted to watch this event because of the history behind it. My Life Lately
During these past few weeks of school, I have had so much fun. Everyday has been a journey. So many differnt things to do. First I have to go to class. Then, I have fun with my friends and see what they are up too. There are also so many meetings that go on around campus involving differnt organizations. Finally, I try to fit a little time to study into my schedule.
When I go to class, it feels like all of my energy is taking away from me. I am attentive and take notes but I just feel so tired sometimes. I don't really know what it is. Maybe it is because I don't get enough sleep at night. I need to learn how to get off the phone at night and take my butt to sleep. It's hard trying to wake up a six thirty to get ready for an eight o'clock class. Hopefully I will get use to it before the semester is over.
When I'm with my friends, it's like I have no cares at all. I forget about all the homework and other things that give me headache. We just have so much fun and laugh about everything. Most of the time we just sit around and do nothing but talk to each other about our problems. I love hanging with my friends. Without them I would be a sad person.
Half of my time goes to this organization called AASO. This organization helps you to get involved on campus and helps you meet new people that have already experienced what we are going through now. They have different branches of the organization such as community service, dance team, and gospel choir. My friends and I am apart of the gospel choir. We love to sing.

My Shopping Addiction
Shopping is a very bad habit that I have inherited from my mother. We both love to shop for everything you think of. This is a really hard habit to break.
You go in the store and see all these beautiful things. It seems like they are calling your name. They want to come home with you. I buy everything that I can afford. Sometimes I buy thing that I know I sholudn't have. I just love expensive things. Even tho I don't have the budget to buy expensive things, I still manage to get what I want.
My mother does the same exact thing. She will go in the store and buy whatever she wants. She claims that she don't have any clothes. My mother has two closets full of clothes and shoes. She has enough for each season, the whole year around. I'm the one that grows out of my clothes every year. So I need to get new clothes every year.
My mother and I also love to shop for shoes. Shoes are like the most important thing to have. If you don't have shoes on your feet, you are screwed. I love to shop for flats, heels, and boots. I like to wear flats to shop and just around the city. I love to wear heels on special occasions such as weddings, parties, or just a night out on the town.

Homework
The homework at the University of Southern Mississippi is so no difficult. It's just a lot to do at one time. You would think that it would be better since you only have five classes. No it is not like that. The homework just hit you like a bomb at the end of the week. You think that you are good for the whole week. Then, you get to classes and the teacher says that the assignment is due Friday. You are mad because you know you have other homework due for each of you other classes.
I love doing my homework online. It's fun and so different from what i am use to. You think that the work will be easy for you to complete since the teacher went over it in class. That is not aways the case. When you get online, you realize that some of the work it new to you. The teacher did not go over it. You are worried how you are going to do this work. If you wanna pass the class, you know you have to do the work. While you are trying to complete your work, you get frustrated and upset because you have to figure out how to do it. You may try to put if off until the next day. In the back of your mind you know that the deadline is slowly approaching. You say that you will do it the night before it is due. When that night come, you get upset,tired, and start blaming yourself for waiting until the last minute to do homework. Finally you complete it a few minutes before it is due and is so relieved.
This is the reason why you should always pay attention in class. Read your syllabus daily and make sure you study for test and quizzes. Also complete all assignment's that are due for the week. By doing these things, you should be able to get through your college years.
